Workers' Compensation by Contractor Trade

Coverage priced on the work your crew actually performs. Eight Southwest Florida contractor classifications, what drives the cost of each, and how to avoid a reclassification at audit.

Workers' Compensation by Contractor Trade

Workers' compensation in Florida is priced off two things: the class code assigned to the work your crew actually performs, and the payroll that runs through it. The rate is expressed as dollars per $100 of payroll, so a roofer at $6.752 and an electrician at $2.04 are not being treated differently out of preference — they are being priced on how often people in those codes get hurt, and how badly.

Getting the code wrong is expensive in both directions. Code too broadly and you overpay every single week. Code too narrowly and the premium audit at the end of the year reclassifies the payroll and issues an additional bill, usually with no warning. The most common mistake we see in Southwest Florida is a contractor whose crew has quietly drifted into higher-hazard work — a handyman operation that started taking roof jobs — without the policy ever being updated.

The rates below are Florida advisory rates and are a starting point, not a quote. Your actual cost depends on your experience modification, payroll, claims history and carrier.

Not Sure Which Code Applies?
