General Liability by Contractor Trade

Coverage priced on the work your crew actually performs. Eight Southwest Florida contractor classifications, what drives the cost of each, and how to avoid a reclassification at audit.

General Liability by Contractor Trade

General liability for contractors is rated on the trade you perform, using ISO class codes, and on an exposure basis that is normally your gross receipts or your payroll. As with workers' comp, the classification follows the work actually being done rather than what is printed on the licence — and it is the work actually being done that a carrier will look at when a claim comes in.

Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board requires licensed contractors to carry general liability, but the practical driver is contractual. General contractors, property managers and municipalities across Lee, Collier and Charlotte counties routinely demand $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 aggregate, plus additional insured status and often a waiver of subrogation, before a crew is allowed to start.

Pick your trade below for the classification detail, what drives cost in that trade, and the exclusions that most often turn into declined claims.

Not Sure Which Code Applies?

Classification disputes are the single most common reason a Florida contractor overpays for coverage, and they are usually resolved in a ten-minute conversation about what your crew actually does on a normal day. Call (239) 898-2323 and we will work it out before you buy, not at audit.
